Hyperkeratosis constitutes the thickening of the skin’s outer layer called as stratum corneum. The thickening is mostly due to abnormality in keratin which is usually involved with the elevated granular layer of the skin.

The corneum layer normally differ in its thickness at various places in the skin. So, it needs expertise to identify the hyperkeratosis condition. The thickening of the skin normally happens in response to the pressure or rubbing or any irritation occurring on the skin.

The skin thickening might also lead to corns on feet and hands, formation of callus. Hyperkeratosis is also the result of defensive action of skin against sunlight, infection, irritation due to chemicals and chronic inflammation.

Hyperkeratosis often come is the form of corns and calluses. Corns and calluses develop in areas of skin exposed to repeated friction or pressure. In response, thick layers of dead skin cells pile up and harden. Corns usually develop on irritated toes. Calluses form on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.

Corns are often caused by:

  • wearing shoes that fit poorly – shoes that are too loose can allow your foot to slide and rub
  • certain shoe designs that place excessive pressure on an area of the foot – for example, high-heeled shoes can squeeze the toes
