Phlebitis, if mild, may or may not cause symptoms. Pain, tenderness, redness (erythema), and bulging of the vein are common symptoms of phlebitis. The redness and tenderness may follow the course of the vein under the skin.

Low grade fever may accompany superficial and deep phlebitis. High fever or drainage of pus from the site of thrombophlebitis may suggest an infection of the thrombophlebitis (referred to as septic thrombophlebitis).

Palpable cords along the course of the vein may be a sign of a superficial clot or superficial thrombophlebitis.

A deep venous thrombosis may present as redness and swelling of the involved limb with pain and tenderness. In the leg, this can cause difficulty walking.

Treatment of phlebitis may depend on the location, extent, symptoms, and underlying medical conditions.

In general, superficial phlebitis of the upper and lower extremities can be treated by applying warm compresses, elevation of the involved extremity, encouraging ambulation (walking), and oral anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen [Motrin, Advil], diclofenac [Voltaren, Cataflam, Voltaren-XR], etc.). Topical anti-inflammatory medications may also be beneficial, such as diclofenac gel. External compression with fitted stockings is also a recommended for patients with superficial phlebitis of the lower extremities.

 Phlebitis Early Stages

Phlebitis is also known as superficial thrombophlebitis and happens when a vein gets inflamed due to blood clots or damage to the walls of the vein.

This condition affects veins that are closest to the skin's surface, including varicose veins.

There are two sets of veins in the arms and legs: the superficial veins that run just under the skin and the deep veins.

Phlebitis is most common in the lower part of the legs, but can also affect the arms, breasts or a man's penis. Symptoms include:

Pain

Hard lumps under the skin

Skin redness.

Although phlebitis can be painful, it is not usually a serious problem, and should not usually affect a person's usual activities.

However, there is a small risk of a blood clot travelling around the body and causing problems in a vein deeper under the skin, called DVT ( deep vein thrombosis). This can cause more pain and swelling, plus aching in a leg.

There is no specific drug or treatment for phlebitis. The inflammation usually eases after a couple of weeks, but lumps and a darker colour to a patch of skin may remain for several months.

Basic home care steps for phlebitis include:

Keeping a leg raised

Wearing compression stockings

Staying active to encourage good blood circulation

Easing pain with a cold flannel

Using anti-inflammatory painkillers such as aspirin

Using anti-inflammatory cream or gel on the skin around the affected vein.

 Hyperkeratosis on Head

Keratosis is a disease characterized by an overgrowth of horny tissue or tissue containing a protein called keratin. There are several different types of keratosis with varying degrees of severity including actinic keratosis, keratosis pilaris, hyperkeratosis, seborrheic keratosis and keratosis follicularis. The most common type of keratosis affecting the scalp is actinic keratosis.

Actinic keratoses often begin as very small bumps which are identified by their "sandpaper" quality. Early on, the bumps may disappear and reappear. The keratoses come in a variety of colors including pink, tan, red and skin color. Over time, the keratoses develop into scaly or crusty lesions on the scalp, face, forearms, hands, shoulders, neck and other areas of the body.

Actinic keratoses are called "pre-cancers" because they have the potential to develop into a squamous cell carcinoma. About 2 to 10 percent of squamous cell carcinomas spread to internal organs and become life-threatening. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 10 percent of keratoses are malignant or dangerous and harmful. However, if caught and treated early on actinic keratoses can be eliminated before they have the opportunity become cancerous.

Treatment

Since it is impossible to determine which keratoses will become cancerous, all lesions must be removed. Your dermatologist will have several options available for removing the keratoses including freezing or cryotherapy, chemotherapeutic creams, chemical peels, scraping or cutterage, dermabrasion and laser therapy. Of course, the best treatment is prevention. Actinic keratosis can be prevented by wearing sunscreen outdoors and by avoiding tanning booths.

Hyperkeratosis is one of the forms of keratosis, a skin condition in which the skin is covered with dry coarse scales due to the overproduction of keratin, resulting in thickening of the granular layer of the dermis of the skin. Such seal skin can appear anywhere, especially in areas of friction or irritation, but there are areas on the body are more prone to the formation of Horny growths: heels, knees, elbows and forearms.

Sometimes a symptom of keratodermas is visible on the face. Due to violation of the protective properties of the skin penetrate into the pores of harmful bacteria. The dermis loses moisture and becomes inflamed, appear dilated porous pores. Secreted sebum is not excreted from the pores and comedones arise (black dots).

Most often, hyperkeratosis is combined with the excessive dryness of the skin, but the problem of excessive keratinization of the dermis occurs not only because of its drying out, but also due to the fact that dead cells are not shed. Lesions usually do not cause any symptoms, but can sometimes be the reason:

Itching.

Chronic inflammation of the skin.

Changes in skin color.

Hair loss.

Treatment of hyperkeratosis depends on its cause, location, type, and severity. If the doctor did not reveal the disease to cope with hyperkeratosis can help the beautician.

 Phlebitis

Phlebitis is a condition in which a vein becomes inflamed. The inflammation may cause pain and swelling.

Superficial phlebitis affects veins on the skin surface. The condition is rarely serious and usually resolves with local treatment of the inflammation with warm compresses and anti-inflammatory medications. Sometimes superficial phlebitis can be associated with deep vein thrombophlebitis and medical evaluation may be needed.

Phlebitis in the deep veins is referred to as deep vein thrombophlebitis (or DVT, deep vein thrombosis) affects the veins located deeper in the arms and legs.

Superficial phlebitis

There is usually a slow onset of a tender red area along the superficial veins on the skin. A long, thin red area may be seen as the inflammation follows the path of the superficial vein. It may spread in a spider like pattern if smaller feeder veins become involved.

This area may feel hard, warm, and tender. The skin around the vein may be itchy and swollen.

The area may begin to throb or burn.

Symptoms may be worse when the leg is lowered, especially when first getting out of bed in the morning.

A low-grade fever may occur.

Sometimes phlebitis may occur at the site where a peripheral intravenous (IV) line was started. The surrounding area may be sore and tender along the vein.

If an infection is present, symptoms may include redness, fever, pain, swelling, or breakdown of the skin.

 Hyperkeratosis on Face

Hyperkeratosis is a thickening of the outer layer of the skin. This outer layer contains a tough, protective protein called keratin.

This skin thickening is often part of the skin's normal protection against rubbing, pressure and other forms of local irritation. It causes calluses and corns on face. It can cause whitish areas inside the mouth.

There are many examples of hyperkeratosis. They include:

Warts. Warts are small bumps on the skin that are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet.

Chronic eczema. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin. It can be triggered by allergies, irritating chemicals and other factors. Eczema is also called dermatitis. Eczema causes itching, redness and tiny blisters.

Lichen planus. This condition may appear as a lacy white patch on the inside of the mouth. Or it may be an itchy, violet, scaly patch elsewhere on the skin. Lichen planus may be related to an abnormal reaction of the immune system.

Actinic keratoses. These are flat, red, rough, sandpaper-like spots or patches of skin. They can be as tiny as a few millimeters. They are caused by excessive exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of sunlight. They occur on sun-exposed areas of skin. And they have the potential to develop into skin cancer.

Seborrheic keratoses. These are small, noncancerous skin growths. They can be tan, brown or black. They appear on the face, trunk, arms or legs. Seborrheic hyperkeratoses are very common. Their cause is a mystery.

Inherited conditions. Several inherited conditions cause hyperkeratosis. They cause a widespread, thick, platelike scaling of the skin. Symptoms begin either shortly after birth or during early childhood.

 Phlebitis Hand Veins

Superficial thrombophlebitis is an inflammatory condition of the veins due to a blood clot just below the surface of the skin. It usually occurs in the legs, but it can occasionally occur in the arms, hnds and neck. Anyone can develop superficial thrombophlebitis, but females are affected more than males.

Symptoms of superficial thrombophlebitis include:

redness and inflammation of the skin along a vein

warmth of the skin and tissue around the vein

tenderness and pain that worsens with added pressure

pain in the limb

darkening of the skin over the vein

hardening of the vein

Call your doctor if the above symptoms appear or get worse, or you develop new symptoms such as fever and chills. This could be a sign of a more serious illness or condition.

Superficial thrombophlebitis is treated at home in most cases. Your doctor might recommend applying a warm compress to the affected area and elevating it to relieve swelling. Wearing support stockings can also help reduce swelling.

Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or aspirin, can help reduce the redness and irritation caused by inflammation. This condition usually goes away within two weeks. It can take longer for the hardness in your vein to subside.

In rare, serious cases, removal or stripping of the vein is necessary. This is more common if you have varicose veins.

Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of a vein just under the skin, usually in the leg. A small blood clot also commonly forms in the vein, but is usually not serious. The condition usually settles and goes within 2-6 weeks. Treatments can ease pain or discomfort.

Swelling, redness and tenderness along a part of the vein are the usual symptoms. You may develop a high temperature (fever). If a blood clot develops inside the inflamed part of the vein, the vein may then feel hard or knobbly. The blood clot is usually of little concern, as it is small. There are other veins which carry the blood and bypass the blocked vein.

When the inflammation settles, a persistent darker area of skin (hyperpigmentation) may remain over the affected vein. A small firm lump may also persist below the skin. This may be tender to the touch for some time.

Many cases occur for no apparent reason. A slight injury to the vein may trigger the inflammation in some cases. Most bouts of superficial thrombophlebitis last for 3-4 weeks. If they are associated with varicose veins, they are likely to return (recur). No treatment may be needed if the symptoms are mild.

Hyperkeratosis constitutes the thickening of the skin’s outer layer called as stratum corneum. The thickening is mostly due to abnormality in keratin which is usually involved with the elevated granular layer of the skin.

The corneum layer normally differ in its thickness at various places in the skin. So, it needs expertise to identify the hyperkeratosis condition. The thickening of the skin normally happens in response to the pressure or rubbing or any irritation occurring on the skin.

The skin thickening might also lead to corns on feet and hands, formation of callus. Hyperkeratosis is also the result of defensive action of skin against sunlight, infection, irritation due to chemicals and chronic inflammation.

Hyperkeratosis often come is the form of corns and calluses. Corns and calluses develop in areas of skin exposed to repeated friction or pressure. In response, thick layers of dead skin cells pile up and harden. Corns usually develop on irritated toes. Calluses form on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.

Corns are often caused by:

wearing shoes that fit poorly – shoes that are too loose can allow your foot to slide and rub

certain shoe designs that place excessive pressure on an area of the foot – for example, high-heeled shoes can squeeze the toes

 Hyperkeratosis Foot

This is a skin thickening normally occurring in females with skin that is brown. It is caused by too much buildup of keratin in the outer layers of skin. The thickening of this skin defends it from rubbing, irritation as well as pressure. Most of the types of this condition are painless. While hyperkeratosis can happen anyplace on the body there are several regions that are typically more prone.

Symptoms of this condition usually depend upon the form of hyperkeratosis. Calluses, corns, as well as plantar warts can be quite painful. In some individual they may just be because of their unsightliness.

Hyperkeratosis can look:

Itchy, scaly patches, bluish-purple – Lichen planus

Whitish spots in the mouth due to friction from dentures

Chronic inflammation of the skin known as eczema triggered by irritating allergies, chemicals, or other factors

Scaly dry skin with areas of color changes

Hair loss.

Red, flat coarse skin patches – actinic keratosis

Small harmless brown or black skin growth of unknown causes

Often hyperkeratosis can just develop on its own, minus any obvious cause, containing areas that are large on the skin. In these instances, hyperkeratosis normally starts quickly after birth as portion of a disorder that is genetic.
