Boil also known as furuncle of the nose is a fairly common condition.The main cause is nose picking causing infection of the the hair follicle of the nasal vestibule. This is common in dry climate where the secretions of the nose get dried up and cause irritation in the nose forcing the person to introduce finger in the nose to remove the crust. The skin over that area becomes painful and swelling starts appearing over the area which spreads very fast.The patient can have fever also.The area over the tip of nose and central part of upper lip is called dangerous area of the face as infection from this area can spread to the brain (cavernous sinus) causing fatal complications. So never press or squeeze a boil over this area or you will land yourself in grave trouble.Give plenty of hot fomentation and take appropriate antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs. Local application of antibiotic cream is also effective. With this treatment the recovery takes place in a couple of days.

Furuncle is defined as an acute suppurative inflammation of a hair follicle.Boil is only seen on hairy skin so it is found only in the vestibule of the nose. The vestibule of the nose has a lateral and medial walls lined by thick skin which contain hairs.The inflammation may occur either in the lateral or medial wall or at the junction of the two or at the floor. Furuncle is caused by the Staphyllococcus albus and aureus.

A carbuncle is a cluster of boils, draining pus onto the skin. It is usually caused by bacterial infection, most commonly with Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes, which can turn lethal. However, the presence of a carbuncle is actually a sign that the immune system is working. The infection is contagious and may spread to other areas of the body, or other people; those living in the same residence may develop carbuncles at the same time.

The initial cause of a carbuncle can often not be determined. Triggers that make carbuncle infections more likely include rashes such as folliculitis; friction from clothing or shaving; having hair pulled out, such as sites where clothing or furniture grab at hairs; generally poor hygiene; poor nutrition; or weakening of immunity. Poor health may be an important factor – for example, persons with diabetes and immune system diseases are more likely to develop infections (especially bacterial infections of the leg or foot).

A furuncle is a large infection of a hair follicle, the tiny opening in the skin from which a hair grows. Furuncles are due to an invasion of bacteria that enter the follicle and cause a bacterial infection of the follicle and nearby skin.

Furuncles are most commonly due to an infection of the bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus. The body tries to attack the bacterial infection by sending a surge of white blood cells (infection fighting cells) to the infected follicle. If the infection isn't stopped quickly, living and dead white blood cells, fluid, bacteria, and dead tissue collect within the infected follicle and form a deep pocket of pus. The surrounding tissue also becomes inflamed and painful.
