Molluscum Contagiosum on Penis

Molluscum contagiosum is an infection caused by a poxvirus (molluscum contagiosum virus). The result of the infection is usually a benign, mild skin disease characterized by lesions (growths) that may appear anywhere on the body. Within 6-12 months, Molluscum contagiosum typically resolves without scarring but may take as long as 4 years.

The lesions, known as Mollusca, are small, raised, and usually white, pink, or flesh-colored with a dimple or pit in the center. They often have a pearly appearance. They’re usually smooth and firm. In most people, the lesions range from about the size of a pinhead to as large as a pencil eraser (2 to 5 millimeters in diameter). They may become itchy, sore, red, and/or swollen.

Mollusca may occur anywhere on the body including the face, neck, arms, legs, abdomen, and genital area, alone or in groups. The lesions are rarely found on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.

The virus is spread:

During any type of skin to skin contact such as sexual activity, contact sports, or other activity that involves touching the bumps of an infected person.

Through contact with a towel, washcloth or something else that has the virus on it.

To other parts of an infected person’s body by scratching the bumps.

Molluscum contagiosum bumps will usually go away on their own, but it may take several months. Treatment shortens how long you have them. If you have bumps on your genital area such as your penis, inner thighs, buttocks and you’re sexually active; you should be treated to help prevent spreading the virus to your sexual partner(s). Side effects of treatment include: pain, irritation and possible scarring.

For adults who have the small lumps (mollusca) on the skin, a condom should be used during sex. This will not completely stop skin-to-skin spread but will reduce the chance of passing it on considerably.

 Vitiligo on the Penis

The appearance of penile vitiligo spots usually give away the diagnosis. Vitiligo of the penis usually appears as penile discoloration on the foreskin, less commonly on the glans of the penis. Penile vitiligo can sometimes appear similar to discoloration patches caused by balanitis xerotical obliterans (BXO) but experienced urologist can usually easily differentiate between BXO and penile vitiligo by the texture of the skin and associated findings (presence of vitiligo on other parts of the body, signs of BXO such as tissue scarring, elevated patches).

Vitiligo can be treated with medications, creams, lasers and surgical techniques. Vitiligo can recur after treatment and new lesions can appear in the same or a different location. In some patients who do not respond to medications, circumcision or excision of affected areas can provide an effective treatment option. Often, local skin flaps, a plastic surgery technique is utilized to excise extensive vitiligo.

 Genital Herpes Symptoms in Men

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause blisters and skin ulcers in the genital and anal area. It can be caused by either of two types of herpes simplex virus, HSV-1 or HSV-2. HSV-2 is the more common cause. HSV-1 more commonly causes sores on the face and mouth.

HSV spreads from person to person through kissing and skin-to-skin contact, as well as through vaginal, oral or anal intercourse. An infected person often transmits the virus when skin blisters or ulcers are visible, but the virus also can be spread when there are no symptoms or skin sores at all. Herpes virus can be transmitted by people who don't know they are infected.

In a pregnant woman with HSV infection (usually HSV-2), the virus can pass to the baby during delivery, causing infections of the newborn's skin, mouth, lungs or eyes. If the herpes virus spreads through the baby's bloodstream, it can cause serious infections of the brain and other vital organs.

Any of the following symptoms of a genital herpes simplex virus infection can occur in a man or a woman:
Cracked, raw, or red areas around your genitals without pain, itching, or tingling
Itching or tingling around your genitals or your anal region
Small blisters that break open and cause painful sores. These may be on or around your genitals (penis or vagina) or on your buttocks, thighs, or rectal area. More rarely, blisters may occur
inside the urethra -- the tube urine passes through on its way out of your body.
Pain from urine passing over the sores -- this is especially a problem in women.
Headaches
Backaches
Flu-like symptoms, including fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue

Genital herpes is not the only condition that can produce these symptoms. Sometimes, herpes simplex virus is mistaken for vaginal yeast infections, bacterial infections, or bladder infections. The only way to know whether they are the result of herpes simplex virus or another condition is to be checked by a health care provider.

Genital herpes is diagnosed with a physical exam and typically confirmed with a swab test or a blood test.
