Nummular eczema, also known as nummular dermatitis or discoid eczema, is a chronic condition that causes coin-shaped spots to develop on the skin. These spots are often itchy and well-defined. They may ooze clear fluid or become dry and crusty.

Nummular eczema often appears after a skin injury, such as a burn, abrasion, or insect bite. The condition may result in one patch or multiple patches of coin-shaped lesions. The patches can last for several months.

Nummular eczema tends to occur more often in men than in women. Men usually have their first episode between ages 55 and 65. Women typically get it during adolescence or young adulthood. Though the symptoms of nummular eczema can be bothersome, they can be treated with medications and topical medicines. It isn’t contagious, which means it can’t be passed from one person to another through direct skin contact.

The most common and noticeable symptom of nummular eczema is a patch of coin-shaped lesions on the body. The lesions frequently develop on the arms or legs, but they may eventually spread to the torso and hands. They may be brown, pink, or red. Some lesions may itch and burn. Other lesions may ooze fluid and eventually crust over. The skin around the lesions may be red, scaly, or inflamed.

Call your doctor if you believe you have nummular eczema. If it’s left untreated, a secondary skin infection could develop. Once this occurs, a yellowish crust will form on the infected lesions.

Phlebitis, if mild, may or may not cause symptoms. Pain, tenderness, redness (erythema), and bulging of the vein are common symptoms of phlebitis. The redness and tenderness may follow the course of the vein under the skin.

Low grade fever may accompany superficial and deep phlebitis. High fever or drainage of pus from the site of thrombophlebitis may suggest an infection of the thrombophlebitis (referred to as septic thrombophlebitis).

Palpable cords along the course of the vein may be a sign of a superficial clot or superficial thrombophlebitis.

A deep venous thrombosis may present as redness and swelling of the involved limb with pain and tenderness. In the leg, this can cause difficulty walking.

Treatment of phlebitis may depend on the location, extent, symptoms, and underlying medical conditions.

In general, superficial phlebitis of the upper and lower extremities can be treated by applying warm compresses, elevation of the involved extremity, encouraging ambulation (walking), and oral anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen [Motrin, Advil], diclofenac [Voltaren, Cataflam, Voltaren-XR], etc.). Topical anti-inflammatory medications may also be beneficial, such as diclofenac gel. External compression with fitted stockings is also a recommended for patients with superficial phlebitis of the lower extremities.

It's common in people with varicose veins.

Like all types of eczema, the affected skin becomes:

itchy

red and swollen

dry and flaky

scaly or crusty

There may be periods when these symptoms improve and periods when they become more severe.

Your legs may become swollen, especially towards the end of the day or after long periods of standing. Varicose veins (swollen and enlarged veins) are often visible on the legs.

Some people also have other symptoms, such as:

brown discolouration of the skin

red, tender and tight skin that can eventually become hardened (lipodermatosclerosis)

small, white scars (atrophie blanche)

pain

eczema affecting other parts of the body

Left untreated, leg ulcers can develop. These are long-lasting wounds that form where the skin has become damaged.

 Freckles on Legs

Freckles are flat, tanned circular spots that typically are the size of the head of a common nail. The spots are multiple and may develop on sun-exposed skin after repeated exposure to sunlight. These are particularly common in people of fair complexion on upper-body skin areas like the cheeks, nose, arms, and upper shoulders. In rare instances they may also occur on legs.

Although freckles on leg are not as common as those seen on other exposed parts of body, the underlying cause remains the same. Frequent and too much exposure to sunlight for a long duration is primary reason for development of the tanned spots on legs.

Freckles on leg are frequently observed among people who wear shorts and keep their leg exposed to sunlight for long duration. They are more obvious among fair skinned individuals with red hair and blue eyes. Persons playing certain sports in sunlight wearing shorts are vulnerable to develop such spots on their leg. It is also common among women and men who remain exposed to too much of sunlight while sunbathing.

Freckles on leg are harmless skin blemishes, however many people may not like them due to cosmetic reasons. There are many options available for those who wish to get rid of such tanned spots on their legs.

If freckles on leg are difficult to be removed with conventional home remedies, you can talk to your dermatologist for other options. Laser therapy, chemical peels are effective in getting rid of freckles on legs completely. However, they are expensive as compared to home remedies.

 Stasis Dermatitis on Legs

Stasis dermatitis is skin inflammation that develops in people with poor circulation. It most often occurs in the lower legs because that’s where blood typically collects.

When blood collects or pools in the veins of your lower legs, the pressure on the veins increases. The increased pressure damages your capillaries, which are very small blood vessels. This allows proteins to leak into your tissues. This leakage leads to a buildup of blood cells, fluid, and proteins, which causes your legs to swell. This swelling is called peripheral edema.

People with stasis dermatitis usually experience swollen legs and feet, open sores, or itchy and reddish skin. A protein called fibrinogen may be responsible for the changes you see in your skin. When fibrinogen leaks into your tissues, your body converts it to the active form of the protein, which is called fibrin. As it leaks out, the fibrin surrounds your capillaries, forming what are known as fibrin cuffs. According to the Cleveland Clinic, these fibrin cuffs may prevent oxygen from entering your tissues. When your cells don’t receive enough oxygen, they can become damaged and die.

The symptoms of stasis dermatitis include:

skin discoloration

itching

scaling

ulcers

You may also experience symptoms of venous insufficiency, including:

leg swelling

calf pain

calf tenderness

a dull ache or heaviness in your legs that gets worse when you stand

In the early stages of stasis dermatitis, the skin on your legs may look thin. Your skin may also itch, but try not to scratch it. Scratching can cause the skin to crack and fluid to seep out.

 Shoe Contact Dermatitis

Shoe contact dermatitis can be defined as skin manifestations on the feet caused by the wearing of shoes, boots and/or sandals. This often occurs because the skin on the feet reacts to particular substances (allergens) found in footwear.

Shoe contact dermatitis usually begins on the top surface of the big toe and spreads to the upper surfaces of the foot. Dermatitis may also be found on the sole of the foot, the side of the feet and heels and the legs.

Symptoms of contact allergic dermatitis may include swelling, redness, blisters or cracks in the skin, burning, itchiness and pain. The allergy can develop over a long period of time as the skin on the feet is repeatedly exposed to a certain allergen found in the shoe. However, it is not unusual to suddenly become allergic to a substance after months or years of exposure.

Shoe contact dermatitis should clear rapidly once the offending allergen is removed. This will mean not being able to wear the offending shoes ever again unless the allergen can be removed, e.g. allergy to a nickel buckle could be resolved by replacing with a non-nickel buckle.

Over-the-counter creams and ointments containing mild topical steroids, such as hydrocortisone, may be used to help control itching, swelling, and redness. In more severe cases, a prescription topical steroid may be required, as well as antibiotic medication if the skin becomes blistered, painful and infected.

The thickening is mostly due to abnormality in keratin which is usually involved with the elevated granular layer of the skin.

The corneum layer normally differ in its thickness at various places in the skin. So, it needs expertise to identify the hyperkeratosis condition. The thickening of the skin normally happens in response to the pressure or rubbing or any irritation occurring on the skin.

The skin thickening might also lead to corns on feet and hands, formation of callus. Hyperkeratosis is also the result of defensive action of skin against sunlight, infection, irritation due to chemicals and chronic inflammation.

Hyperkeratosis often come is the form of corns and calluses. Corns and calluses develop in areas of skin exposed to repeated friction or pressure. In response, thick layers of dead skin cells pile up and harden. Corns usually develop on irritated toes. Calluses form on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.

Corns are often caused by:

wearing shoes that fit poorly – shoes that are too loose can allow your foot to slide and rub

certain shoe designs that place excessive pressure on an area of the foot – for example, high-heeled shoes can squeeze the toes

Stretch marks are seen when a person grows or gains weight rapidly or has certain diseases or conditions.

The medical name for stretch marks is striae.

Stretch marks can appear when there is rapid stretching of the skin. They are often seen when a woman's abdomen gets larger during pregnancy. They can be found in children who have become rapidly obese. They may also occur during the rapid growth of puberty in males and females. Striae are most commonly located on the breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and flank.

Stretch marks appear as parallel streaks of red, thinned, glossy skin that over time become whitish and scar-like in appearance. The stretch marks may be slightly depressed and have a different texture than normal skin.

Stretch marks may also occur as a result of abnormal collagen formation, or a result of medicines or chemicals that interfere with collagen formation. They may also be associated with longtime use of cortisone compounds, diabetes, Cushing disease, and post-pregnancy.

 Skin Cancer on Leg

Cancer builds up if the molecule present in tissue cells responsible of the encoding of genetic information, DNA, turns out to be defective and the human body won`t be able to fix the deterioration. The defective cells start to expand as well as dividing with no control. When this happens within the skin, skin cancer builds up. When the harmful cells increase in numbers, they develop a tumor. Due to the fact that skin cancer typically evolves within the outer layers of skin, the epidermis, the tumor will likely be precisely observable. As a result, the majority of skin cancers is noticeable during the early stages.

Skin cancer is a very serious problem and one of the most common types of cancer. Many people tend to ignore the warning signs when the skin is involved, or at least until it really starts to bother them. However, because the disease can be just as deadly as any other type of cancer, you should be aware of the symptoms of skin cancer so that you can know to seek medical attention.

One of the most obvious skin cancer symptoms is a change in your skin, such as a new mole or a lesion. If this suddenly appears, especially if it changes after a relatively short period of time, you should immediately see your doctor. Skin cancer will generally affect any areas on the body that are exposed to the sun, especially the face but also the hands, neck, arms, scalp, lips, ears and chest. More uncommonly, it could affect the palms of the hands, between the toes, beneath the fingernails or toenails and even the genital area.

Most often, you will notice a brown spot as symptoms, especially a raised mole or bump in the affected area. The mole may have darker speckles over its surface, and any mole that changes in color or becomes larger in size or bleeds should be seen as a possible sign of skin cancer. If you notice such a skin issue, make an appointment to see a dermatologist as soon as possible. You can also consult your primary care physician, though he or she might refer you to a dermatologist or to another facility where you can have a biopsy done of the mole.

 Melanoma on Leg

Malignant melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, can sometimes be hard to detect on the legs, especially hard-to-see areas behind the knees and the back of legs. Because skin cancer on the legs is more difficult to detect, early detection and knowing what to look for is key to treating it and to preventing it from spreading. Malignant melanomas begin as an abnormal mole. They may have asymmetrical lesions and irregular borders. If undetected and untreated, these spots usually change from brown or black to shades of white, red or blue. Sometimes the mole's color may be darker in one area and lighter in another. Some melanomas are small, while others can have a diameter larger than a pencil eraser. To prevent malignant melanoma from appearing on your legs, wear sunblock with a high SPF on a daily basis, even while wearing pants. If you come across any odd-shaped mole or growth while checking your legs, or if a mole that used to look normal changes shape, size or color, seek immediate medical attention to be tested for abnormal skin cells. If not taken care of immediately, melanoma on the legs is often fatal. Malignant melanoma can grow out of control quickly and metastasize to other organs.

 Herpes on Feet

The herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause blisters and sores almost anywhere on the skin. These sores usually occur either around the mouth and nose, or on the genitals and buttocks. HSV infections can be very annoying because they can periodically reappear. The sores may be painful and unsightly. For chronically ill people and newborn babies, the viral infection can be serious, but rarely fatal. There are two types of HSV - Type 1 and Type 2 The Type 1 virus causes cold sores. Most people get Type 1 infections during infancy or childhood. They usually catch it from close contact with family members or friends who carry the virus. It can be transmitted by kissing, sharing eating utensils, or by sharing towels. The sores most commonly affect the lips, mouth, nose, chin or cheeks and occur shortly after exposure. Patients may barely notice any symptoms or need medical attention for relief of pain. The Type 2 virus causes genital sores. Most people get Type 2 infections following sexual contact with an infected person. The virus affects anywhere between 5 and 20 million people, or up to 20 percent of all sexually active adults in the United States. With either type of herpes simplex, you can spread lesions by touching an unaffected part of the body after toughing a herpes lesion.

Herpes is the scientific name used for eight related A viruses of humans. Herpes simplex is related to the viruses that cause infectious mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr Virus), chicken pox and shingles (varicella zoster virus).

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Often referred to as fever blisters or cold sores, HSV Type 1 infections are tiny, clear, fluid-filled blisters that most often occur on the face. Less frequently, Type 1 infections occur in the genital area. Type 1 may also develop in wounds on the skin. Nurses, physician, dentists, and other health care workers rarely get a herpetic sore after HSV enters a break in the skin of their fingers. There are two kinds of infections - primary and recurrent. Although most people when exposed to the virus get infected, only 10% will actually develop sores or cold blisters when this infection occurs. The sores of a primary infection appear two to twenty days after contact with an infected person and can last from seven to ten days. The number of blisters varies from one to a group of blisters. Before the blisters appear, the skin may itch or become very sensitive. The blisters can break as a result of minor injury, allowing the fluid inside the blisters to ooze and crust. Eventually, crusts fall off, leaving slightly red healing skin. The sores from the primary infection heal completely and rarely leave a scar. However, the virus that caused the infection remains in the body. It moves to nerve cells where it remains in a resting state. Many people will not have a recurrence. Others will have a recurrence either in the same location as the first infection or in a nearby site. The infections may recur every few weeks or less frequently. Recurrent infections tend to be milder than primary infections. They can be set off by a variety of factors including fever, sun exposure, and a menstrual period. However, for many, the recurrence is unpredictable and has no recognizable cause.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection with herpes simplex virus Type 2 usually results in sores on the buttocks, penis, vagina or cervix, two to twenty days after contact with an infected person. Sexual intercourse is the most frequent means of getting the infection. Both primary and repeat attacks can cause problems including; a minor rash or itching, painful sores, fever, aching muscles and a burning sensation during urination. HSV Type 2 may also occur in locations other than the genital area, but is usually found below the waist. As with Type 1, sites and frequency of repeated bouts vary. The initial episode can be so mild that a person does not realize that he or she has an infection. Years later, when there is a recurrence of HSV, it may be mistaken for an initial attack, leading to unfair accusations about the source of infection. After the initial attack, the virus moves to nerve cells remaining there until set off again by a menstrual period, fever, physical contact, stress, or something else. Pain or unusual tenderness of the skin may begin between one to several days before both primary and recurrent infections develop. This is called a prodrome.

 Furuncle on Leg

Boils (furuncles) are painful pus-filled bumps on the skin resulting from the deep infection of a hair follicle. The infection is usually caused by a type of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus ("staph"). Many people are "carriers" of the staph germ, meaning that it normally lives on their skin or in their nose without doing them any harm. Tiny breaks in the surface of the skin (such as those caused by friction or scratching), however, can help the germ gain entry into and infect the hair follicle, resulting in a boil.

Boils may resolve with simple self-care measures, but the infected fluid (pus) needs to drain in order for them to heal completely. Many boils drain of their own accord, or they can be lanced by a health care professional. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Untreated boils can enlarge or grow together to form a giant multi-headed boil (carbuncle). Rarely, the infection in the skin can get into the bloodstream, leading to serious illness.
