Scarlet Fever Rash in Adults

Scarlet fever can occur as a result of a group A Streptococcus (group A strep) infection. The signs and symptoms include a sore throat, fever, headaches, swollen glands, and a characteristic rash. The rash is red and feels like sandpaper and the tongue may be red and bumpy. It most commonly affects children between five and fifteen years of age. Scarlet fever affects a small number of people who have either strep throat or streptococcal skin infections. The bacteria are usually spread by people coughing or sneezing. It can also be spread when a person touches an object that has the bacteria on it and then touches their mouth or nose. The characteristic rash is due to the erythrogenic toxin, a substance produced by some types of the bacterium. The diagnosis is typically confirmed by culturing the throat.

Scarlet fever is characterized by:
Sore throat
Fever
Bright red tongue with a "strawberry" appearance
Forchheimer spots (fleeting small, red spots on the soft palate)
Paranoia
Hallucinations

A characteristic rash, which:
is fine, red, and rough-textured,
blanches upon pressure,
appears 12–72 hours after the fever starts,
generally begins on the chest and armpits and behind the ears but may also appear in the groin,
on the face, often shows as red cheeks with a characteristic pale area around the mouth (circumoral pallor),
is worse in the skin folds (so-called Pastia's lines, where the rash runs together in the armpits and groin, appears and can persist after the rash is gone),
may spread to cover the uvula, and
begins to fade three to four days after onset, upon which desquamation (peeling) begins. "This phase begins with flakes peeling from the face. Peeling from the palms and around the fingers
occurs about a week later." Peeling also occurs in the axilla, the groin, and the tips of fingers and toes

The rash is the most striking sign of scarlet fever. It usually appears first on the neck and face (often leaving a clear, unaffected area around the mouth). It looks like a bad sunburn with tiny bumps, and it may itch. It then spreads to the chest and back and finally to the rest of the body. In the body creases, especially around the underarms and elbows, the rash forms the classic red streaks known as Pastia's lines. On very dark skin, the streaks may appear darker than the rest of the skin. Areas of rash usually turn white (or paler brown, with dark complexioned skin) when pressed on. By the sixth day of the infection, the rash usually fades, but the affected skin may begin to peel.

Scarlet fever (scarlatina) is an infection that's caused by group A streptococcus bacteria. If your child has scarlet fever, his symptoms are likely to be a red rash, a sore throat and a fever.

Your child is most likely to get scarlet fever if he is between two years and eight years old. The peak season for scarlet fever spans from September to April. With more children being affected, it makes sense to learn the symptoms to look out for.

If your child has scarlet fever, his first symptoms are likely to be:
a sore throat
a headache
a fever
extreme tiredness
nausea and/or vomiting
A red rash with a texture like sandpaper normally develops 12 hours to 48 hours after this. It will start in one place, usually on your child's chest and stomach, and then spread over his body. It's unlikely to spread to your child’s face, but his cheeks may become flushed, with the skin around his mouth remaining pale.

Use the glass test to check suspicious rashes. Press the side of a clear drinking glass to your child’s skin. A scarlet fever rash will fade to white under pressure. If this doesn’t happen, tell your doctor, as it could be a sign of meningitis.

Other symptoms of scarlet fever may include your child developing:
Swollen lymph nodes in his neck.
Loss of appetite.
Tummy pain.
A white coating on his tongue which usually peels away after a few days, leaving his tongue red and swollen (strawberry tongue).

 Scarlet Fever Symptoms

Scarlet fever is a disease caused by an infection with bacteria in the group A Streptococcus (the same bacteria that cause strep throat).

Scarlet fever was once a very serious childhood disease, but now it is easy to treat. The streptococcal bacteria that cause it produce a toxin that leads to the hallmark red rash of the illness.

The main risk factor for getting scarlet fever is infection with the bacteria that cause strep throat. A history of strep throat or scarlet fever in the community, neighborhood, or school may increase the risk of infection.

The time between infection and symptoms is short, generally 1 - 2 days. The illness typically begins with a fever and sore throat.

The rash usually first appears on the neck and chest, then spreads over the body. People say it feels like sandpaper. The texture of the rash is more important than the appearance to confirm the diagnosis. The rash can last for more than a week. As the rash fades, the skin around the fingertips, toes, and groin area may peel.

Other symptoms include:
Abdominal pain
Bright red color in the creases of the underarm and groin
Chills
Fever
General discomfort (malaise)
Headache
Muscle aches
Sore throat
Swollen, red tongue (strawberry tongue)
Vomiting

Although scarlet fever in adults is not as common as those in kids of ages 6 months to 10 years old, it still helps to learn about it because it is a very communicable condition. If a member of a household has it, it can immediately spread, especially to those of the age bracket stated above. Thus, you must be aware of the symptoms to watch out for so that if they manifest, you will know what to do in order to not make the situation worse and to avoid others from being affected.

The following symptoms are commonly present in scarlet fever in adults:
• Fever that could reach higher than 38.3 degrees Celsius.
• Sore throat that is caused by the bacteria.
• Red rashes that usually appears two to five days after the onset of sore throat and fever. The rashes would look like sunburn and with texture as that of a sand paper.
• Strawberry tongue or the condition where the tongue looks red and bumpy and is surrounded by white covering which could be likened to the said fruit. This is among the most obvious indicators of the presence of scarlet fever.
• Dark red lines could form in areas like the armpits, knees, groin, necks and elbows.
• Flushed face due to the presence of the rashes.
• The sore throat could lead to conditions like "dysphagia" or difficulty in swallowing.
• The occurrence of swollen lymph nodes which are tender to the touch.
• Nausea, headache and vomiting may also manifest as well as other symptoms.

The problem with most of these symptoms is that they may also occur with other sickness such as with strep throat. Everything starts with the sore throat and fever and a few days after that would the rashes appear and their appearance signals that the illness is no longer contagious. This is why, even if you are just in the stage of having a fever, you should already keep your distance from the kids at home so that no matter how it develops, they are spared.

Scarlet fever in adults would be diagnosed after a swab testing is undertaken. When its existence is determined, antibiotics will be given to kill the bacteria that are causing the disease. Remember to take the medicine up to the last day of prescription to ensure the elimination of the bacteria so as to prevent further complications. It is better to prevent it from spreading rather than have everyone suffer the same.

Scarlet fever is a term used for strep throat with a rash. Scarlet fever is most common in children ages 2 to 10, but it can affect people of any age.

Scarlet fever is caused by streptococcal (strep) bacteria, the same bacteria that cause strep throat. There are many different strains of strep bacteria, some of which cause more serious illness than others. The type of strep that infects the throat and causes scarlet fever is called group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABS).

The symptoms of scarlet fever are the same as the symptoms of strep throat (except for the rash). If you or your child has the symptoms below, call your doctor. Symptoms include:
Fever of 101°F (38.33°C) or higher.
Sore throat and difficulty swallowing.
White or yellow spots or coating on the throat and tonsils.
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
Other symptoms that appear before the rash, especially in children, may include general body aches, headache, stomachache, nausea, vomiting, or listlessness. Scarlet fever usually
doesn't occur with cold symptoms, such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, or cough.

The most noticeable symptom of scarlet fever is a rough, red rash that feels like fine sandpaper. The rash usually appears 24 hours after the fever starts. The rash begins on the chest and abdomen and then spreads over the rest of the body within 1 to 2 days. The rash and redness are more apparent in skin folds, especially in the groin, armpits, and elbow creases. It usually fades in about a week, and at that time the skin may begin to peel.

After the skin starts to peel, bright red spots may appear on the tongue, giving it an appearance called "strawberry tongue."

Diagnosis of scarlet fever is usually based on a medical history, an examination of the throat, and a rapid strep test or throat culture to test for strep bacteria. One or both of these tests are needed to confirm infection with strep bacteria.

 Scarlatina Rash in Children

Scarlet fever is caused by an infection with group A streptococcus bacteria (usually strep throat). The bacteria make a toxin (poison) that can cause the scarlet-colored rash that gives this illness its name.

Not all streptococci bacteria make this toxin and not all kids are sensitive to it. Two kids in the same family may both have strep infections, but one child (who is sensitive to the toxin) may develop the rash of scarlet fever while the other doesn't.

Usually, if a child has this scarlet rash and other symptoms of strep throat, it can be treated with antibiotics. So if your child has these symptoms, it's important to call your doctor.

The rash is the most striking sign of scarlet fever. It usually begins looking like a bad sunburn with tiny bumps and it may itch. The rash usually appears first on the neck and face, often leaving a clear unaffected area around the mouth. It spreads to the chest and back, then to the rest of the body. In body creases, especially around the underarms and elbows, the rash forms classic red streaks. Areas of rash usually turn white when you press on them. By the sixth day, the rash usually fades, but the affected skin may begin to peel.

Aside from the rash, there are usually other symptoms that help to confirm a diagnosis of scarlet fever, including a reddened sore throat, a fever above 101°F (38.3°C), and swollen glands in the neck. The tonsils and back of the throat may be covered with a whitish coating, or appear red, swollen, and dotted with whitish or yellowish specks of pus. Early in the infection, the tongue may have a whitish or yellowish coating. A child with scarlet fever also may have chills, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

When scarlet fever happens because of a throat infection, the fever usually stops within 3 to 5 days, and the sore throat passes soon afterward. The scarlet fever rash usually fades on the sixth day after sore throat symptoms began, but skin that was covered by rash may begin to peel. This peeling may last 10 days.

The infection itself is usually cured with a 10-day course of antibiotics, but it may take a few weeks for tonsils and swollen glands to return to normal.

In rare cases, scarlet fever may develop from a streptococcal skin infection like impetigo. In these cases, the child may not get a sore throat.

Scarlet fever (sometimes referred to as scarlatina) is an infectious disease characterized by fever, sore throat (pharyngitis), and a characteristic rash. Scarlet fever is caused by an infection with group A Streptococcus, the same bacteria responsible for causing "strep throat" and various other skin infections (for example, impetigo and erysipelas). Scarlet fever is predominantly a childhood disease occurring in children 2-10 years of age, though it can less commonly occur in older children and adults. The incidence and mortality rates associated with this once feared disease have significantly decreased due to the introduction and widespread use of antibiotics.

 Scarlet Fever Adults

Most of us have already heard of an illness called scarlet fever. This condition, in fact, has already claimed a countless number of lives all over the globe. However, the high incidence of mortality with regards to scarlet fever is not due to the severity of the condition, but rather due to the lack of knowledge about this particular illness. Scarlet fever is caused by an exotoxin produced by streptococcus pyogenes, which is easily manageable by today’s antibiotics. Nevertheless, many lives still succumb to this ailment due to the lack of information about it. This is the reason why it is essential for us to learn how to determine problems such as this by knowing how to identify its major signs and symptoms.

Appearance of red rashes. Scarlet fever rashRed rashes are considered to be a good indicator of scarlet fever. These rashes are somewhat similar to sunburn in terms of appearance and also carry a sandpaper-like texture. These rashes are commonly located or spotted on the face that goes to the neck and will eventually spread to the trunk and the extremities. Once pressure is applied to the skin, it will turn instantly pale.

Formation of red lines. Red lines are also common in this type of condition, which is usually seen in the folds of the groin armpits, elbows, neck and also the knees. These are usually darker in color, in comparison to the red rashes.

Strawberry tongue. Scarlet Fever Rasberry TongueThis symptom is considered to be the pathognomonic sign or the main indicator of such disease. This is characterized by the red and bumpy appearance of the tongue, which is covered by a white coating which resembles a strawberry.

Flushed face. Flushing of the face is also very common due to the red rashes accompanied with a white ring around the mouth.

Fever with chills. Based on its name alone, we can already tell that high temperature is present in this type of condition. Most of these temperatures are even higher than 38.3 degrees C.
Soreness of the throat. A sore throat is also evident in some cases of scarlet fever. This symptom is somewhat related to strep throat since both illnesses are caused by the same species of bacteria.

Dysphagia. Dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing is also possible, which is linked to the soreness of the throat making it very painful to eat or even drink.

Enlarged neck glands. This enlargement is related to the lymph nodes that are usually tender to touch.

Nausea, vomiting, and headache. These are other common symptoms of scarlet fever. Now that we are aware of the common symptoms of this disease, it will be a lot easier for us to treat and manage scarlet fever as soon as possible. In case you have observed some of these signs in our body, it is advisable for you to immediately seek attention from your health provider, especially when your body temperature is already more than 39 degrees C.

Scarlet fever is most commonly seen in children under the age of 18. The most common symptoms seen in children include rash, sore throat, fever, and chills. Treating children who have scarlet fever usually involves antibiotics to cure the infection, and other treatments to relieve symptoms.

Scarlet fever (known in older medical literature as scarlatina) is an illness caused the same bacteria that cause strep throat. A person with scarlet fever most commonly develops a sore throat and rash. Scarlet fever is usually seen in children under the age of 18. For unknown reasons, scarlet fever has become less common in recent years.

Scarlet fever is an illness caused by bacteria called group A streptococcus. Group A streptococcus produces a toxin that causes the scarlet fever symptoms. Some children are sensitive to this toxin; others have developed immunity. This is why two children in the same household can have a strep infection, but only one may develop scarlet fever.

The time between infection and the first scarlet fever symptoms is called the scarlet fever incubation period. The scarlet fever incubation period in children is usually one to four days.

In children, the most common symptoms of scarlet fever include:
Scarlet fever rash (see Scarlet Fever Pictures)
Sore throat
Fever
Chills
Reddened face
Swollen lymph glands
Tongue resembling a strawberry.

Other, less common symptoms of scarlet fever in children include:
Nausea
Headache
Vomiting
Body aches.

After the rash is gone, often the skin on the tips of the fingers and toes begins to peel.
