It has a long preinvasive period. Initially the lentigo maligna is a flat, brown, stain-like lesion. The development of an elevated nodule within the area of pigmentation indicates the change to vertically invasive lentigo maligna melanoma. This variant does not occur in children.

Lentigines) - a brown, sharply circumscribed macule resembling a freckle.

A solar lentigo on the face (plural, solar lentigines), also known as a sun-induced freckle or senile lentigo, is a dark (hyperpigmented) lesion caused by natural or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light. Solar lentigines may be single or multiple. This type of lentigo is different from a simple lentigo (lentigo simplex) because it is caused by exposure to UV light. Solar lentigines are benign, but they do indicate excessive sun exposure, a risk factor for the development of skin cancer.

Solar lentigines typically appear on areas exposed to natural or artificial UV light. They appear as well-defined, light brown to black, flat spots. In people who have been treated with a form of UV light therapy called PUVA, solar lentigines may occur in areas of the skin not exposed to UV light.

A lentigo is a small, sharply circumscribed, pigmented macule surrounded by normal-appearing skin. Histologic findings may include hyperplasia of the epidermis and increased pigmentation of the basal layer. A variable number of melanocytes are present; these melanocytes may be increased in number, but they do not form nests. Lentigines may evolve slowly over years, or they may be eruptive and appear rather suddenly. Pigmentation may be homogeneous or variegated, with a color ranging from brown to black.

Multiple clinical and etiologic varieties exist. The distinction of a lentigo from other melanocytic lesions (eg, melanocytic nevi, melanoma) and its role as a marker for ultraviolet damage and systemic syndromes is of major significance.

 Vitiligo in White Person

The initial appearance of the white patches can be followed by a stable period without any progression of the condition. Later on, further cycles of pigment loss and stability may be observed. Vitiligo commonly affects areas on the skin that are exposed to sun, body folds (such as armpits), previous sites of injury, areas around moles, or areas around body openings. It is rare for pigment to return once the white patches have developed. Vitiligo can also affect the eyelids and hair.

 Vitiligo Women

Vitiligo woman is a condition where pale white patches develop on the skin. It is due to a lack of colour (pigment) in the affected areas of skin. Vitiligo does not make you feel ill. However, the appearance of vitiligo can be distressing. This is particularly so for darker-skinned people where white patches are more noticeable.

Areas of skin with patches of vitiligo have no or very few melanocytes. The melanocytes are either damaged or destroyed in the body. Therefore, melanin cannot be made and the colour of the skin is lost. It is not known why the melanocytes go from affected areas of skin. They may be destroyed by the immune system or self-destruct for reasons not yet known. It is thought to be an autoimmune condition. This means that your own immune system (which normally protects your body from infections) causes damage. In the case of vitiligo it destroys the cells in your skin that make melanin.

 Vitiligo on the Penis

The appearance of penile vitiligo spots usually give away the diagnosis. Vitiligo of the penis usually appears as penile discoloration on the foreskin, less commonly on the glans of the penis. Penile vitiligo can sometimes appear similar to discoloration patches caused by balanitis xerotical obliterans (BXO) but experienced urologist can usually easily differentiate between BXO and penile vitiligo by the texture of the skin and associated findings (presence of vitiligo on other parts of the body, signs of BXO such as tissue scarring, elevated patches).

Vitiligo can be treated with medications, creams, lasers and surgical techniques. Vitiligo can recur after treatment and new lesions can appear in the same or a different location. In some patients who do not respond to medications, circumcision or excision of affected areas can provide an effective treatment option. Often, local skin flaps, a plastic surgery technique is utilized to excise extensive vitiligo.

Vitiligo causes spots of white skin that are often symmetrical (even), with dark or red borders. The patches can occur anywhere, but the areas most commonly affected are the backs of the hands, the face, and areas that have skin folds, such as the armpits and genitals. Body openings, such as the lips, eyes, nipples and anus are also common areas for vitiligo, as are areas that have been sunburned.

Vitiligo can occur in bursts, so that sizeable areas of skin may rapidly lose their pigment during the beginning stages of the condition, yet then these whitened skin patches may abruptly stop expanding for months or years.

 Girls with Vitiligo

The main sign of girls with vitiligo is color (pigment) loss that produces light or white patches on your skin. Usually, the discoloration first shows on sun-exposed areas, such as the hands, feet, arms, face and lips.

Vitiligo signs include:

Skin discoloration

Premature whitening or graying of the hair on your scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard (usually before age 35)

Loss of color in the tissues that line the inside of your mouth and nose (mucous membranes)

Loss of or change in color of the inner layer of the eyeball (retina)

Discolored patches around the armpits, navel, genitals and rectum

Vitiligo can start at any age, but most often appears before age 20.

Depending on the type of vitiligo you have, the discolored patches may cover:

Many parts of your body. With this most common type, called generalized vitiligo, the discolored patches often progress similarly on corresponding body parts (symmetrically).

Only one side or part of your body. This type, called segmental vitiligo, tends to occur at a younger age, progress for a year or two, then stop.

One or only a few areas of your body. This type is called localized (focal) vitiligo.

 Vitiligo in Children

Vitiligo begins as a small spot on your child’s skin with a color much lighter than the surrounding skin. Over time these light patches may spread and grow while progressively attaining a milky-white appearance. The spread can be fast or slow and can occur symmetrically on both sides of the body or may be limited to just a few areas. Segmental vitiligo, which is more common in children affects only one side of the body and may stop after progressing for a year or two.

Vitiligo can be identified by a dermatologist after a physical examination of your child. The diagnosis is then confirmed after taking into account your child’s medical and family history and rarely, a biopsy (taking a small piece of the affected skin to observe microscopic details). An absence of pigment cells in skin will confirm the diagnosis.
