Eczema Scalp

Irritated, red, and itchy skin on the scalp, which causes the flakes known as dandruff, is called scalp eczema.

Scalp eczema is a type of eczema that causes inflamed, itchy, dry skin to form on your scalp.

The most common type of scalp eczema is known as seborrheic dermatitis, and its most unwelcome symptom is dandruff.

When a baby's scalp gets this scaly, flaky skin, it's often called cradle cap.

Scalp eczema is characterized by skin patches that may be:

Red and scaly

Flaky

Greasy or waxy

Very itchy

Oozing or have "weeping" lesions

Producing blisters

Causing a discharge from the ear if eczema continues from the scalp into the ear canal

Causing changes in skin color after healing

Other skin conditions, such as psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis (inflammation caused by an allergic reaction to a certain substance), or atopic eczema (which often occurs in those with asthma or seasonal allergies), may cause symptoms similar to those of scalp eczema.

Irritation and an itchy scalp can usually be treated with a medicated dandruff shampoo.

The chemical ingredients in these shampoos, including zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, and ketoconazole, among others, can help ease the inflammation and get rid of flaky, scaly skin when used two or three times a week.

Topical creams, ointments, or sprays made from coal tar or corticosteroids can also be applied to help calm the irritation and stop the flaking.

 Hyperkeratosis on Head

Keratosis is a disease characterized by an overgrowth of horny tissue or tissue containing a protein called keratin. There are several different types of keratosis with varying degrees of severity including actinic keratosis, keratosis pilaris, hyperkeratosis, seborrheic keratosis and keratosis follicularis. The most common type of keratosis affecting the scalp is actinic keratosis.

Actinic keratoses often begin as very small bumps which are identified by their "sandpaper" quality. Early on, the bumps may disappear and reappear. The keratoses come in a variety of colors including pink, tan, red and skin color. Over time, the keratoses develop into scaly or crusty lesions on the scalp, face, forearms, hands, shoulders, neck and other areas of the body.

Actinic keratoses are called "pre-cancers" because they have the potential to develop into a squamous cell carcinoma. About 2 to 10 percent of squamous cell carcinomas spread to internal organs and become life-threatening. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 10 percent of keratoses are malignant or dangerous and harmful. However, if caught and treated early on actinic keratoses can be eliminated before they have the opportunity become cancerous.

Treatment

Since it is impossible to determine which keratoses will become cancerous, all lesions must be removed. Your dermatologist will have several options available for removing the keratoses including freezing or cryotherapy, chemotherapeutic creams, chemical peels, scraping or cutterage, dermabrasion and laser therapy. Of course, the best treatment is prevention. Actinic keratosis can be prevented by wearing sunscreen outdoors and by avoiding tanning booths.

 Eczema on Head

Scalp eczema, or seborrheic dermatitis, is a type of eczema that causes redness, itching, flaking and the development of oily, scaly patches on the scalp. Many factors may contribute to the development of eczema, including genetics, climate, stress, overall health and an overgrowth of or sensitivity to the yeast that normally reside on the scalp. The American Academy of Dermatology states that the immune system is likely involved in some way, as the condition is more common in those with HIV. Scalp eczema affects people of all races and ages and may spread to other areas of the body.

Avoid taking long, hot showers or baths, as these may dry the skin, increase itching and worsen scalp eczema. The Nemours Foundation also suggests avoiding harsh shampoos and soaps and hair products containing alcohol or fragrances.

Keep your skin cool to prevent irritation and itching. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends limiting activities that make you sweaty and hot. Showering with lukewarm water immediately after exercising and applying moisturizing ointment to dry, itchy or irritated areas will help soothe the skin. Oil-based moisturizers are more effective at treating dry skin and eczema than water-based moisturizers.

 Chicken Pox on Head

Chicken pox is a very contagious illness that typically occurs during a person's childhood, from 4 to 10 years of age. Those infected will find themselves covered with hundreds of red, itchy blisters, filled with fluid that can burst and become crusted. Here are some things you should know about the chicken pox:
It is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV).
The illness is highly contagious, requiring the infected person to stay at home during the duration of the contagious period, which typically lasts from four to five days.
Chicken pox is an airborne disease that is commonly spread through coughing, sneezing or having direct contact with fluids that secrete from the blisters.
Has the appearance of a severe rash that can appear almost anywhere on the body.
Children usually develop up to 500 of the itchy, red blisters all over their skin.
It commonly starts from the head, face and scalp, and spreads from there.

In children, common ailments start just before the chicken pox rash breaks out. Symptoms include:
Headache
Fever
Stomach ache
Loss of appetite

After the first couple of days after the rash has appeared, the blisters will start to get cloudy, then harden and begin to scab. More groups of the rash will continue to form. Those infected do not need to worry about scarring unless they scratch at the scabs, which can cause infection.

Skin cancer — the abnormal growth of skin cells — most often develops on skin exposed to the sun. But this common form of cancer can also occur on areas of your skin not ordinarily exposed to sunlight.

There are three major types of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

You can reduce your risk of skin cancer by limiting or avoiding exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Checking your skin for suspicious changes can help detect skin cancer at its earliest stages. Early detection of skin cancer gives you the greatest chance for successful skin cancer treatment.

 Herpes on Head

Herpes is a very common infection. It is caused by two different but closely related viruses. The viruses are herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both are easy to catch. They remain in the body for life and can produce symptoms that come and go.
Both forms of herpes can infect the oral area, the genital area, or both. When the infection is on or near the mouth, it is called oral herpes. Oral herpes is caused most often by HSV-1. When a herpes infection is on or near the sex organs, it is called genital herpes. Genital herpes is caused most often by HSV-2. More than half of American adults have oral herpes. And about 1 out of 6 American adults have genital herpes. Millions of people do not know they have herpes because they never had, or noticed, the herpes symptoms.

Only a health care provider can diagnose herpes by performing a physical exam and tests. A blood test can tell if you are infected with oral or genital herpes — even if you don't have symptoms. Health care providers can also confirm herpes infection by testing fluids taken from the sores.
If you think you have herpes sores, get them checked out as soon as possible. It's important to be sure that the sores are herpes. Other serious sexually transmitted infections, like syphilis, may look like herpes but need different treatment.

 Folliculitis on Head

Scalp folliculitis is an inflammatory disorder of the hair follicles in the scalp. The condition is also known as "acne necrotica miliaris" or "Proprionibacterium folliculitis".

Scalp folliculitis is characterised by small, very itchy pustules on the scalp, often most troublesome on the frontal hairline. There may be only a small number of lesions or they may be very numerous. They are hard to leave alone because of the itch. They often become sore and crusted.

The cause of scalp folliculitis is not well understood. It is generally considered to be an inflammatory reaction to components of the hair follicle, particularly the micro-organisms. These include:
Bacteria (especially Propionibacterium acnes, but in severe cases, also Staphylococcus aureus)
Yeasts (Malassezia species)
Mites (Demodex folliculorum)
