A boil is a localized infection of the hair follicle and the skin tissue surrounding it. It is a red swollen painful bump under the skin which looks similar to an overgrown pimple. It is filled with pus. It is caused by staphylococcus bacteria. Boils can occur anywhere on the body, but most often they are present in the armpits, thighs, buttocks, shoulders, face, chest, back, nose, ear and lips. Boils in general and nose boils in particular need immediate medical attention, or else it can lead to many complications. Particularly nose boils are risky because the veins in the nose are directly connected to the brain. If the infection reaches the brain through nasal veins, it can cause cavernous sinus thrombosis, a relatively fatal condition.
