It causes a papulonodular eruption which is intensely itchy. Patients may be driven to distraction by the itch/scratch cycle which the disease induces, as may their doctors by their inability to treat the condition effectively.

Signs:

Nodules/papules:

≤2 cm in diameter.

Discrete.

Scaly.

Symmetrical distribution.

Firm.

Hyperpigmented or sometimes purpuric.

Usually on extensor surfaces of the legs/arms, and may occasionally affect the trunk.

There may be a few lesions or up to several hundred in some cases.
Patients may be observed to scratch repeatedly or rub the lesion during the consultation, often in preference to pointing them out when asked to indicate the problem.

The condition appears to be relatively common, particularly among patients who have some of the associated/precipitating conditions; however, there are no surveys of its prevalence in the general population. It is more common in middle-aged women.

It was common in HIV-positive patients before the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) but is now.relatively uncommon in treated patients. However, it is still prevalent where access to HAART is limited. One study found that the development of prurigo nodularis in HIV patients was a sign of severe immunosuppression.

Strophulus may be red or white. Red Strophulus begins as red blotches, slightly raised in the centre; the redness soon fades, and the central elevation enlarge and form flattened pimples. White Strophulus consists of pearly-white, opaque pimples, about the size of a pin’s head, usually on the face and arms.

This desease is peculiar to infants and is often called red-gum or red-gown. Several parts of the body are affected in succession, it doesn’t come at once. It chiefly affects the face and extremities; and is sometimes intermittent; not periodicl; but it comes and goes.

Causes: unsuitable diet, and consequent digestive derangement. It is most frequent in children who are too much shut-out from fresh air.

Remedies: chamomilla. This remedy is often sufficient. A dose thrice daily.

Pruritus is defined as an unpleasant sensation that provokes the desire to scratch. Certain systemic diseases have long been known to cause pruritus that ranges in intensity from a mild annoyance to an intractable, disabling condition.

Generalized pruritus may be classified into the following categories on the basis of the underlying causative disease: renal pruritus, cholestatic pruritus, hematologic pruritus, endocrine pruritus, pruritus related to malignancy, and idiopathic generalized pruritus.

The signs and symptoms of Senile Pruritus include:

Itching

Scaly skin

It can affect the skin of any part of the body

Treatment strategies that may be adopted in the management of Senile Pruritus include:

For mild skin conditions, self-care measures are recommended, such as washing with mild (antibacterial) soap and applying warm compress

Application of anti-itch, over-the-counter creams that contain hydrocortisone can provide relief from pain and itching sensation

Oral medications: The physician may prescribe oral corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, or antihistamines to provide relief from severe itching sensation

Ultraviolet light therapy

Follow-up care with regular screening and checkups are important
