Sometimes, there is blistering and oozing, called weeping eczema or wet eczema.

Intensely itchy crops of skin-coloured blisters arise on the palms and the sides of the hands and fingers. Similar symptoms often affect the feet. It is likely this form of dermatitis is triggered by emotional stresses via sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Chronic relapsing vesiculosquamous dermatitis is a common pattern of palmar and finger dermatitis, in which episodes of acute vesicular dermatitis are followed by chronic scaling and fissuring.

Weeping or oozing eczema is more common in infants, but adults can suffer from it as well. See your doctor if your eczema makes it hard for you to function normally, keeps you from sleeping or if you think it might be infected. Some people turn to home remedies to soothe and dry up weeping, oozing eczema. Before trying a home remedy for your weeping eczema, get the OK from your doctor.

 Eczema on the Ears

Dermatitis of the ear canal is itching, scaling, flaking, and swelling of the skin of the ear canal and skin at the entrance of the ear canal.

There are two types of dermatitis of the ear canal:

Contact dermatitis

Aural eczematoid dermatitis

Contact dermatitis of the ear canal is an allergic reaction to triggers such as nickel-containing earrings and numerous beauty products (for example, hairsprays, lotions, and hair dye).

Aural eczematoid dermatitis of the ear canal can occur spontaneously in some people who have certain kinds of dermatitis-like conditions such as seborrhea and psoriasis.

Both types of dermatitis cause itching, redness, a clear discharge or moisture, and peeling, darkening, and painful cracking of the skin. The skin irritation and cracking may allow an infection caused by bacteria (acute external otitis) to develop. The first symptom of a bacterial infection is typically severe ear pain.

To treat contact dermatitis, people should eliminate allergic triggers, especially earrings and possibly even hearing aid molds. Trial and error may be needed to identify the allergic trigger. Doctors give people a cream containing a corticosteroid such as betamethasone to decrease swelling and itching. People should avoid putting cotton swabs, water, and other possibly irritating substances in the ear.

There are actually two types of weeping eczema: primary and secondary.

Primary types refer to the blistering types of eczema, such as dysrodhitc eczema, nummular eczema or discoid eczema. These can vary from just one or two blisters, or small crops of more than three. These look like blisters and contain a clear fluid. This fluid can leak through the skin’s epidermis if scratched, bumped, or picked at (very common to happen), which is where the primary term “weeping eczema” comes from.

Secondary types refer to the weeping caused by a secondary problem, and is often confused with primary types. The biggest difference between the two is that secondary weeping eczema happens after your initial breakout, in response to outside bacteria or foreign items. Secondary types can occur over large areas of the body, or over areas of previously dry eczema. Secondary types contain milky or yellow fluid.

On your skin there lives a thriving community of bacteria, called Staphylococcus Aureus (or Staph A.) These are located in heavy concentrations around your nose, mouth, ears, privates, as well as just on your skin itself.

According to research, the biggest factor (if not the only factor) that causes weeping on your skin, is due to these bacteria.

Small areas of weeping eczema from colonization can usually be treated at home, and will probably benefit from the tips in this article, however if you have large eczema areas that are severely covered with Staph A, then it’s important to check with your doctor to rule out any complications such as a Staph infection.

 Dry Eczema on Hands

Almost always, your skin will itch before a rash appears in eczema.

Typically, eczema shows itself as:

Patches of chronically itchy, dry, thickened skin, usually on the hands, neck, face, and legs (but it can occur anywhere). In children, the inner creases of the knees and elbows are often involved.

If scratched, dry patches of skin and open sores with crusts may develop and may get infected.

It can be hard to tell for sure if you have eczema. You’ll want to see a dermatologist or other doctor to find out.

At your appointment, your doctor will check your skin and talk with you about your symptoms, your health history in general, and any rashes or allergies that run in your family.

If your doctor decides you need meds to treat your eczema, those may include:

Hydrocortisone. Over-the-counter cream or ointment versions of it may help mild eczema. If yours is severe, you may need a prescription dose.

Antihistamines. Ones you take by mouth are available over-the-counter and may help relieve symptoms. Some of these make you drowsy, but others don’t.

Corticosteroids. Your doctor may prescribe these if other treatments don’t work. Always follow your doctor's directions when taking steroids by mouth.

Ultraviolet light therapy. This may help if your skin condition is severe.

Eczema is not a single health condition but a recognizable reaction pattern seen in a number of skin diseases.

Atopic dermatitis, a common causes of eczema, is more prevalent in those with asthma and hay fever.

Eczema signs and symptoms include tiny blisters (vesicles) that can weep and ooze, eventually producing crusted, thickened plaques of skin. It is almost always quite itchy.

It is important to distinguish the different causes of eczema because effective treatments often differ.

If eczema is produced by skin exposure to a specific substance, it can be helpful to avoid it.

Keeping the skin healthy and moisturized can prevent certain kinds of eczema.

You may have Atopic Dermatitis if:

Your skin is dry and reddened and, unlike dry and very dry skin, it cannot be cured, only managed.

Your skin is prone to scaling, thickening and cracking. Skin is intensely itchy and has a tendency to reddening and inflammation. This is not only caused by moisture deficiency but also a disruption of fatty acid metabolism which leads to a breakdown of the skin barrier function.

Your dry skin experiences flare-ups where it appears reddenend, irritated, itchy and inflamed . This may be all at the same time or just one or two of these symptoms.

 Eczema on Shin

Most often, a rash affecting the lower legs is a type of dermatitis. The terms ‘dermatitis’ and ‘eczema’ are often used interchangeably. Acute dermatitis presents as red, swollen and blistered plaques. Chronic dermatitis accompanied by rubbing and scratching results in darkened (hyperpigmented), and thickened (lichenified) plaques.

There are several different types of lower leg dermatitis, which is common at all ages.

Management depends on making a correct diagnosis. General advice should include:

Avoid and treat dry skin, using non-soap cleansers and thick simple emollients. Avoid exposing the legs to direct heat or the hot air of the heater in a car.

Minimise swelling – avoid standing for prolonged periods, take regular walks, elevate the feet when sitting or overnight and wear special graduated compression stockings long term.

Prescription treatments may include oral antibiotics for secondary infection and topical steroids of varying potency – weak products can be used long term if necessary but potent topical steroids should be used once or twice daily for short courses of one to four weeks.

Avoid topical antibiotics, topical antihistamines and multi-ingredient fragranced or herb-containing emollients because of the risk of provoking contact allergy.

Nummular eczema, also known as nummular dermatitis or discoid eczema, is a chronic condition that causes coin-shaped spots to develop on the skin. These spots are often itchy and well-defined. They may ooze clear fluid or become dry and crusty.

Nummular eczema often appears after a skin injury, such as a burn, abrasion, or insect bite. The condition may result in one patch or multiple patches of coin-shaped lesions. The patches can last for several months.

Nummular eczema tends to occur more often in men than in women. Men usually have their first episode between ages 55 and 65. Women typically get it during adolescence or young adulthood. Though the symptoms of nummular eczema can be bothersome, they can be treated with medications and topical medicines. It isn’t contagious, which means it can’t be passed from one person to another through direct skin contact.

The most common and noticeable symptom of nummular eczema is a patch of coin-shaped lesions on the body. The lesions frequently develop on the arms or legs, but they may eventually spread to the torso and hands. They may be brown, pink, or red. Some lesions may itch and burn. Other lesions may ooze fluid and eventually crust over. The skin around the lesions may be red, scaly, or inflamed.

Call your doctor if you believe you have nummular eczema. If it’s left untreated, a secondary skin infection could develop. Once this occurs, a yellowish crust will form on the infected lesions.

 Eczema in infants

Eczema usually appears in the first six months to five years of a child’s life. While there are a few different types of eczema that your infant or toddler can develop, the most common form is called atopic dermatitis (AD).

Eczema looks and acts differently in infants and toddlers than it does in older children. The location and appearance of eczema changes as they grow, so it’s important to know what to look for during every stage of your infant or toddler’s life.

Babies (first six months)

Eczema usually appears on the face, cheeks, chin, forehead and scalp. It can also spread to other areas of the body, but not usually in the diaper area, where moisture protects the skin. The skin at this stage also tends to look more red and “weepy.”

Babies (six to 12 months)

At this stage, eczema often appears on your baby’s elbows and knees — places that are easy to scratch or rub as they’re crawling. If the eczema becomes infected, it may form a yellow crust, or very small, “pus bumps” on the skin.

Toddlers (two to five years)

Around the age of two, your toddler’s eczema is more likely to appear in the creases of the elbows and knees, or on their wrists, ankles and hands. It may also appear on the skin around your toddler’s mouth and the eyelids. Your toddler's skin may start to look dry and scaly at this stage and become thick with deeper lines — this is called “lichenification.”

Older children (five years +)

Eczema usually appears in the folds of the elbows and/or knees. Sometimes, it’s only on a child’s hands — at least 70% of people have had hand eczema at some time in their life. Redness and itchy patches behind your child’s ears, on their feet or scalp, may also be a sign of AD. But these could also be symptoms of another condition, like seborrheic dermatitis, which can exist with eczema. See your doctor to identify what kind of condition your child has and determine the best course of treatment.

All types of eczema cause itching and redness of the skin. But some, like hand eczema, look and act slightly different than others.

Some symptoms of hand eczema:

Redness

Itching

Pain

Dryness, to the point of peeling and flaking

Cracks

Blisters

Hand eczema, also known as hand dermatitis, is a common condition that affects about 10% of population. Both genetics and contact allergens (irritating substances) play a role in “triggering” this form of eczema. It often affects people who work in cleaning, catering, hairdressing, healthcare and mechanical jobs where they may come into contact with chemicals and other irritants.

Hand eczema isn’t contagious. You cannot “catch” it from another person, or give it to someone else. Even so, the symptoms of hand eczema can impact a person’s self-esteem and their ability to perform on the job.

There is another specific type of hand eczema called pompholyx or dyshidrotic eczema, which causes small, itchy blisters to appear on the palms of the hands. Dyshidrotic eczema tends to affect women more than men. If you think that you might have dyshidrotic eczema, make an appointment with your doctor.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, a condition called atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease that encompasses a variety of skin disorders ranging from allergies to inherited tendencies. While most itchy rashes around the neck are not harmful, they can be particularly uncomfortable, especially when constantly rubbed by shirt collars and jewelry.

Heat rash is a common condition that results in a red itchy rash in the neck area. Heat rash, also called prickly heat or miliaria, develops when sweat glands become clogged and heat becomes trapped underneath the skin. The condition, according to MayoClinic.com, affects babies and adults alike. Symptoms may be mild and alleviated quickly by loosening a shirt collar or they can be severe and cause intense prickling and itching in the folds of the neck. You can prevent heat rash by staying in cool climates or air-conditioned rooms and wearing loose clothing.

Scratching dry itchy skin around the neck can lead to infections, according to the National Institute on Aging. Seniors may develop bleeding when they scratch because the skin is so thin. Moisture and lotions can help, but continuous itching can have more serious ramifications as well, such as difficulty sleeping. If dry itchy skin does not respond to home remedies or a change in detergent, you should see a doctor. Persistent rashes can indicate underlying conditions such as kidney disease or diabetes.

Even a biopsy of all these conditions may not result in a definitive diagnosis, as all three conditions may demonstrate spongiosis and crusting on the hands.

Normally, skin inflammation connected with hand eczema is accompanied by blister formation and pronounced itching, but solid calluses and painful tearing may also occur. The quality of life of the affected person is seriously diminished, especially in the case of chronic forms of the illness, and psychological impact is often very high. This impact is enhanced by the high visibility of the illness on the hands, which may lead to feelings of shame and fear of rejection.

Non-communicable inflammation of the skin of the hands is referred to as hand eczema. Hand eczema is widely prevalent and, as it is a very visible condition associated with severe itching or pain, has serious consequences for the affected person including a high psychological impact. Different disease patterns can be identified according to the course of the illness, appearance of symptoms, degree of severity, or catalysts. Prognosis is hard to predict for individual cases of chronic hand eczema and usually differs from patient to patient. Successful treatment depends on determining the causes of the condition, obtaining an accurate diagnosis, sustainable hand protection procedures and an early, extensive, and where appropriate internal treatment.

One of the most common causes of itching on the web of the fingers is dryness of the skin (medically known as xerosis). Despite being a common condition, it is often overlooked as a potential cause for itching between the fingers. Use of antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers is common in our society, especially in certain occupations. These substances have a tendency to dry out the skin. Also, some people are genetically predisposed to having a dry skin.

Skin irritation is caused by inflammation of the skin upon contact with certain chemical irritants. Rash is a common accompanying feature of the itch caused by exposure to environmental irritants. Medically, this condition is known as contact dermatitis. This is not an allergic reaction, but is caused by tissue damage.

The skin is the outermost protective covering of our bodies. It is the first line of defense against harsh elements in the outside environment. The skin on our hands is especially prone to getting injured since it comes in contact with adverse environmental conditions daily, as we explore and manipulate the world around us. The skin between the fingers is delicate compared to the skin on the other parts of the body. This region of skin folds, also called the web, prevents excessive stretching of the skin during certain movements.
