Eczema on the Stomach

A rash on the stomach may be a coincidence, caused by a dermatological reaction, or it could be suggestive of a more serious problem, such as an infection within the stomach area or surrounding systems.

For the record, a stomach rash in this case refers to any red discoloration on the stomach regardless of how inflamed, bumpy, itchy, blistered, cracked, or pustule-laden it is.

Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is characterized by dry, red, itchy skin that sometimes forms small bumps. Although eczema is not as common on the stomach as it is on the limbs and face, it can happen. The condition is thought to be a mix of genetic and environmental factors and is often provoked by dry weather.

You should consult with a doctor if the area of the rash becomes tender, sore, and/or warm or if a large rash appears or spreads quickly. Other sudden changes in condition like nausea and vomiting should also be considered cause to get re-evaluated for possible complications or a more serious culprit. It is especially important that you see a doctor if the rash appears purple and you have not injured the area recently, as this could be a sign of internal bleeding.

 Stretch Marks on Stomach

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are scars that appear on various parts of your skin, primarily around the stomach, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, lower back and even around your calves. They start out red and purple in appearance and later fade to a slightly off-colored hue that is similar to your skin tone, but still noticeable upon closer inspection. Stretch marks are often the product of stretching or tearing of the dermis, which is one of the layers of skin on a person's body. For many people, stretch marks can be embarrassing and unsightly, but most cases can be avoided.

1. Rapid Weight Gain and Obesity
One of the most common causes of stretch marks for most people is rapid weight gain or obesity. Anywhere in a person's body where fat is stored is most likely to be affected by stretch marks. The size and the amount of stretch marks that appear depend on the extent of a person's weight gain. The more weight that is gained in a short time frame, the more severe the stretch marks will appear.

2. Growth Spurts
Some teenagers may be alarmed to find stretch marks around their body, especially when they aren't overweight or haven't suffered from rapid weight gain at any point in their lives. The common explanation for the appearance of these stretch marks is from rapid growth spurts, especially during puberty. Just like rapid weight gain and obesity, any time the body grows or expands faster than the elasticity of the skin can handle, stretch marks can appear.

3. Weight Lifting
Weight lifting and those who start putting on more muscle mass at a rapid pace, like athletes, can expect to see stretch marks on their body, even though they are in good shape. This is why stretch marks cannot be used to identify a weight problem or obesity, since they can occur on people in top physical condition; the muscles under the skin are just growing too fast for the skin to handle. Those who are affected by stretch marks due to muscle building tend to see scarring primarily around the arms and shoulders.

4. Pregnancy
Pregnancy is most likely the predominant cause of stretch marks in most women. Because a woman's stomach is expanding at such a rapid pace during pregnancy, it is highly likely that she will develop stretch marks around her belly. Multiple pregnancies can lead to the formation of new stretch marks after each pregnancy.

5. Hormones
Hormonal imbalances have been labeled as one of the common causes of stretch marks. Since hormonal changes occur during puberty, pregnancy, obesity and even weight lifting, it's hard to pinpoint which particular factor is to blame for the appearance of stretch marks. The hormonal imbalance that occurs during these times can cause collagen and elastin fibers to tear over stretched skin, creating the appearance of stretch marks.

 Herpes on Stomach

Herpes is a common, life-long infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and generally transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. The symptoms of herpes can vary greatly, mainly depending on whether a person is experiencing their first episode or a recurrence. Once infected you may have symptoms returning on and off for years.

A commonly recognised symptom is the appearance of small, painful blisters - also called vesicles - on the skin. Herpes can appear on the lips (oral herpes), genitals (genital herpes) or on other parts of the body (non-genital herpes).

The herpes simplex virus belongs to a larger family of viruses that cause chickenpox, shingles and glandular fever.

There are 2 types of herpes simplex virus — herpes type I (HSV-1) and herpes type 2 (HSV-2). Herpes type 1 is the virus that most commonly causes cold sores on the lips or face. While often transmitted during childhood through close physical contact, this infection can be transmitted at any age. It can also be transmitted to the genitals through direct skin-to-skin contact, often via oral sex. Although HSV-1 infection is common, many people with the infection do not experience symptoms.

HSV-2 is responsible for the majority of genital herpes and is commonly transmitted through sexual contact — anyone who is sexually active can get herpes type 2. Genital herpes is thought to be one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in Australia.

The primary difference between the 2 viral types is preference of location. Herpes type 1 is usually located in the trigeminal ganglion, a collection of nerve cells near the ear. From there, it tends to recur on the lips or face. In contrast, herpes type 2 is usually found in the sacral ganglion at the base of the spine. From there, it recurs in or around the genital area.

The 2 types of herpes simplex virus behave somewhat differently depending on whether or not they are residing in their preferred site.

Either viral type can reside in either or both parts of the body and infect oral and/or genital areas.
